A learned DJ
Cal Gibson, one half of hip-hop duo Neon Heights, will be performing Aug. 17 at 11 p.m. at Kult. Gibson stands out among DJs for having a degree in literature and is coming to Moscow for the third time. The place seems to have appealed to him the first time around, because since then he's been using Russian swear words in his correspondence with the club's promoters.
Exciting cycling
The BMX cycling Moscow Open Trophy will take place Aug. 17 at noon at the city's new cycling track. BMX racing is like a cross between mountain-bike racing and road cycling, but it's more exciting because spectators get to see the cyclists the whole time. Cyclists from Latvia, one of the European leaders in the sport, will take part in the event, which is expected to draw at least 200 participants.
Putsch soup
Soup Cafe will commemorate the August 1991 attempted coup Aug. 19 by preparing a "putsch" soup, the establishment's 50th kind of soup. The soup in question will be former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's favorite - chicken noodle. Politician Konstantin Borovoi, TV host Yuliana Shakhova and other prominent figures will be on hand to help cook the soup, which will be dished out free at the cafe until Aug. 21, when the coup attempt ended 11 years ago.
Top Dutch techno DJ
The Future party organized by Dutch DJ Michel de Hey in 1995 became a real measure of the quality of Rotterdam's club culture. De Hey won the Update Dance Award in 1998 and 1999 for best Dutch techno DJ, and the organizers of Rotterdam's annual Dance Parade entrust him with the event's main music theme. On Aug. 22, de Hey will share his success with DJ Sanches at Propaganda.
