If you're sitting at home on a rainy Sunday, wearing flannel and drinking a cup of herbal tea, David Gray is for you. If you like semi-moody, somewhat angst-ridden but definitely sincere singer-songwriters like Norah Jones and Dave Matthews, David Gray is for you. And if you like singers who sound like Bob Dylan, such as Jakob Dylan and, well, David Gray, then congratulations, you're a certified David Gray fan.

After the stunning success of his moderately OK "White Ladder" in 1999, Gray has returned to the studio with a lot more cash, and come up with "A New Day at Midnight." Where "White Ladder" was stripped down, "New Day" is overproduced. Where "White Ladder" had some memorable, catchy songs, like "Babylon" and "Sail Away," "New Day" has none.

"A New Day at Midnight" is like one long, drawn-out, slightly soulful Bob Dylan-esque song. The lyrics are forgettable; the songs aren't offensive. They're just too slick and overproduced when they should be stripped down to just a man and a guitar. Gray has worked hard to create genuine mood music. I guess I just wasn't in the mood for it.
