NATALYA CHULKOVA, 24, OFFICE MANAGER
I know using butane instead of gasoline would definitely improve the ecological situation in the city. We should clean up Moscow because pollution is high here. Butane is cheaper. If I had a car, I would probably switch from gas to butane. But I don't have one at the moment, so I can't influence the situation even to the small extent that one person could.
PAVEL POPOV, 50, MANAGER
I am familiar with the new propane-butane devices for the cars, and they are bad. They leak constantly. I drove a propane-butane car for four years, but I always had to ventilate the car before ignition; otherwise, it could have exploded. Theoretically, if there were two cars a car running on gas and a car running on propane-butane, and neither had any problems, I would prefer the car with propane-butane; it's cheaper today.
SVETLANA DOLGOVA, 26, PERSONAL ASSISTANT
The whole process of converting from gasoline to an alternative energy source is likely to meet fierce opposition from some circles, namely gas stations. There are many stations in the capital, and they will oppose any efforts on the part of the Moscow City government to decrease gas consumption. There should be an ad campaign to convince people propane-butane is better. Some stations providing it are already available throughout Moscow. Even now people can buy some equipment, which is not that expensive.
IGOR DUDKO, 45, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF A RESORT
Ecologically speaking, I'm for switching to propane-butane. But there is a danger that the new tanks would be installed poorly or the tanks themselves could be bad and this could be several more times more hazardous than regular gas.
ANTONINA TRETYAKOVA, 23, SECRETARY
I think that Muscovites should change to new, alternative types of fuel. The air in the city is poisoned by millions of Moscow cars releasing fumes on a daily basis. I think ecological problems should be high on the agenda. It's not even a question of money, as some people argue. It's a purely environmental problem: What will our childrenl be breathing? However, we shouldn't think it would be easy to convert. It's always difficult to get used to something new.
ANDRO OKROMCHEDLISHVILY, 50, ECONOMIST
If I install new devices in my car and switch to propane-butane, it will cause a lot of headache. There are hardly enough propane-butane stations in Moscow, and those that exist have long lines. The city center doesn't have any of these stations whatsoever. And, if you drive beyond Moscow, you won't find many of these stations. Safety is certainly still an issue for propane-butane cars. I personally saw some of these cars burning. If all these problems were to be fixed, I would drive one, of course.
